"Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10b
When you characterize God, do you include the fact that He is a God of joy? When God created the world, the Bible says "and God saw that it was good". God shares His pleasure and joy in the Bible as he works with his creation. This doesn't seem to be an attribute of his nature and character that is frequently discussed. Yet, it is in His joy that we find our strength.
God wants us to put the past behind us and enter into His joy. In His joyfulness we will discover strength to bear our burdens and our past scars. In this verse the prophet Nehemiah tells us to forget our sorrows and celebrate the glory, love and power of the True God who calls us by our names. Entering into the joy of God gives us the strength to persevere in the midst of life's difficulties by remembering and celebrating that we belong to a loving and mighty God.
